Dental bridges got their name because they bridge the gap between teeth when one or several are missing. Dental bridges have evolved a great deal, like all dentistry today. The technology of bridgework offers several ways to support a bridge and provide teeth where they are missing.
Here are three methods an experienced dentist will use to restore your smile.
Crown Bridge Attachment
If the teeth on each side of the space to be bridged are healthy, they can be crowned and the bridge supports attached to them. Parts of the teeth need to be removed and crowns placed, otherwise the attachment of the bridge will wear away the natural enamel in time.
Preparing this type of bridge by an experienced dentist takes at least two visits. In the first visit, the adjacent teeth are prepared and temporary crowns are attached. Impressions are made and permanent crowns are crafted. Upon the next visit, the dentist will adhere the permanent crowns and attach the new bridge. This type of bridge will last from five to seven years. The biggest reason for bridge failure is that cavities appear on the supporting teeth. Poor oral hygiene is a major cause of the failure. The teeth under the bridge must be brushed and flossed regularly.
Flexible Denture Bridges
Flexible bridges are an exciting new innovation for those who are concerned about cost. A flexible bridge will cost less than half the price of the previous, traditional bridge. The device consists of a flexible, plastic material providing the missing teeth, which is molded to individual palate specifications. This interesting bridgework/partial slides into the mouth and looks exactly like the surrounding natural teeth. It is easily removed and cleaned. The device can last up to 15 years as it is not easily broken. Flexible dentures are an important addition to restorative dentistry.
Dental Implants
Many people today are considering implants to bridge dental gaps and create the feel and strength of natural teeth. Implanted teeth require a dentist trained in this specialty and a team of co-workers to advance the project. It is important to be in good health for the procedure.
A template of the area to be bridged is created first. A surgical procedure is done to place the titanium implant screws beneath the gum and against the bone. After two to six months, the implants will be firmly affixed through natural bone growth. At that point permanent abutments are attached to the implants, which can support one or multiple teeth.
